JESUS, JOHN DEE, SCIENCE & MAGIC: JASON LOUV, REGINA MEREDITH & PAUL WALLIS

The Fifth Kind – GAIA

When Jesus declares in Matthew’s gospel that the “whole cosmic realm is available to you,” that’s a pretty expansive invitation to explore. But does that exploration mean science or does it mean magic? One figure whose work straddles religion, science and magic was the fascinating John Dee, the real life 16th century inspiration for James Bond. Paul introduces and reflects on a fascinating conversation with Regina Meredith and author and researcher Jason Louv. Their full conversation is available in the OPEN MINDS series on Gaia.com.

John Dee, unknown painter

Note to Readers:

Years ago, I encountered the name John Dee and wondered about it. I was given his name along with four others. I knew some of the others, but not John Dee. Until that moment I had not heard of the mysterious and controversial man of science and magic who lived amidst the Age of Tudor. Since then, I have heard John Dee accused of black magic and all sorts of things. From this thoughtful exploration of John Dee and his world, I see that none of the negative things John Dee was accused of were true. It was as I felt. John Dee was simply misunderstood and that misunderstanding led to him being accused of witchcraft. He was not a wizard, only one if not the most intelligent man of his time. His advanced knowledge of mathematics, his ability to organize a movement, his talent in gathering intelligence, attracted other brilliant minds. He was an astrologer and a mathematician. He collected books and at one time owned over 4,000 books, more than the universities of the time. He traveled to Europe and learned from the top intellectuals and universities. He was intent in rediscovering what he felt humanity had lost during the long dark ages while under the control of the church. He hired scryers to talk to angels and recorded their words. He invoked the wrath of the Jesuits for defying the laws of the church and supported Queen Elizabeth in her determination to protect her small island nation. He created the phrase, British Empire, and taught navigators how to sail upon the open seas in journeys of discovery which would lead to other far-distant lands being claimed by Britain. He was a misunderstood genius who lived during a traumatic and turbulent time when European monarchs and the Church were at war with each other. He was not an evil man, but one who sought after knowledge.

I have ordered the book written by Jason Louv to learn more about John Dee. My curiosity grows…

Sometimes when we are open, we are given a glimpse into our own past incarnations. Then, it is up to us to decide whether or not we will accept the information.
