Bulow Woods Outing | Eliza

Wild Asters

Today I went for my first hike in Bulow Woods, starting at the trailhead off of Walter Boardman Lane, so the “middle” portion of the woods. I headed north to Cisco Ditch and then returned the same way back to the road. Next, I headed south on the old road until reaching the little peninsula that sticks out into the marshland of Bulow Creek.

The horizon is faded out in these photos as there was a morning fog still burning off creating a hazy effect.

Earlier in the week, I took a 3 mile walk to Graham Swamp Trail, another old road that passes through thick forest, bordering on a housing development across the canal to the north and the untrammeled woods of Graham Swamp. The trail is very firm sand and is open to bicycles and walkers.

Graham Swamp Trail passes through county land (I think) lying between Palm Coast and Flagler Beach. One trail head is located on Old Kings Road and the other end is on Colbert Road. The trail is just a small portion of the walking / biking trails available in the area. This was the hike I did after stopping at the hospital briefly.

As I was driving home today, I decided to check out the northernmost trailhead of Bulow Woods. It was open, although the trail doesn’t go through yet since a new bridge has not yet been constructed. Still, a nice 3-mile hike (RT) is possible through some really old woods with HUGE oaks. I fully intend to explore this trail perhaps next week as I haven’t been able to access it until now due to hurricane damage. This northern trailhead is located just outside the Bulow Plantation Ruins State Park. No entry fee is required to park at the trailhead although space is limited.

BTW, I was completely alone in Bulow Woods until returning back to my car to leave. Not one person… just a bunch of squirrels playing in the trees and the occasional croaking call of a wading bird. I love having the woods to myself. Precious soltitude.

Another outing completed satisfactorily.
