Karma
“The word “karma” means “action,” not “fate.” In Buddhism, karma is an energy created by willful action, through thoughts, words and deeds. We are all creating karma every minute, and the karma we create affects us every minute. It is common to think of “my karma” as something you did in your last life that seals your fate in this life, but this is not Buddhist understanding. Karma is an action, not a result. The future is not set in stone. You can change the course of your life right now by changing your volitional (intentional) acts and self-destructive patterns.”
“People get into a heavy-duty sin and guilt trip, feeling that if things are going wrong, that means that they did something bad and they are being punished. That’s not the idea at all. The idea of karma is that you continually get the teachings that you need to open your heart. To the degree that you didn’t understand in the past how to stop protecting your soft spot, how to stop armoring your heart, you’re given this gift of teachings in the form of your life, to give you everything you need to open further.” Pene Chodron, Buddhist Master
“Karma is simply an energy. It’s our intentional thoughts and actions. The energy we generate now and, in the future, will affect us. It has nothing to do with reward or punishment. Karma is unbiased and it’s ours to control.”

Karma meaning: Here’s what a Buddhist Master says
One of my readers sent in an excellent question or series of questions relating to the concept of “karma”:
So, what is karma? Why do we come back to work out karma? Are we all here over and over working out karma?
First, the concept or understanding of karma comes from Eastern philosophy and is extremely ancient, found in Sanskrit texts. When translating an Eastern philosophy or understanding into a Western one, there is bound to be some mistranslation and a layering on of the more Western (Christian) concept of sin and punishment. When asking a question that relates to a metaphysical concept, it is best to go back to the source or as close to the source as you can get in order to truly understand what is going on. I performed a simple Duck Duck search to discover what other authors had to say about karma and found plenty. I also discovered that I have been using the word in a misconstrued manner, since I did not truly understand the concept intellectually.
In the Yogic Encyclopedia, Karma is the law of cause and effect. (1) Karma is action, whether physical or mental, individual or performed by a group, and each action has a consequence. (2) https://www.ananda.org/yogapedia/karma/
Paramhansa Yogananda has taught: “Human beings, according to laws of nature, must pay for all their wrong actions, but when they tune themselves to God through techniques of meditation and remember the perfect image within them, then, realizing their divinity, they need not suffer for their past human errors. But if they again become identified with their humanity by not forgiving others, then they again subject themselves to be governed by the exacting law of karma. Karma can also be changed by the intervention of a Self-realized master who is free from karma.”
Now, how do I understand karma? Well, all that we see, think, and do, is energy. When one does something in one life that creates an imbalance in the energy, one must come back and work to return the energy back into neutral by being mindful and doing acts of kindness, service to others, meditation, and opening one’s heart.
Before you believe that you will be eternally locked into the Wheel of Karma, continually repaying for your misdemeanors or misaligned deeds from other lifetimes, you can alleviate the effects of previous life karma by acting in a conscious manner in this life.
Contrary to what I have written in the recent past, it is not always necessary to know the cause or root to deep trauma. Living on a planet that is controlled by an alien regressive matrix is traumatic enough to cover a world of hurt.
Submitting to a daily practice of meditation with deep conscious breathing will help you reconnect to the body and its intuitive wisdom. To properly heal and release the effects of trauma one needs to be able to feel. The only way you can connect to your feelings is to have your soul essence present within the physical body.
In the end, karma is energy. You can gain ‘good’ karma and ‘negative’; however, your acts of ‘good’ karma may not necessarily out-balance or out-weigh acts of negative karma or intention. When acting out of a desire to harm another person or persons, you will pay for that action, either in that particular lifetime or another one.
One thing to understand, is that the outplaying or re-balancing of karma can be alleviated by becoming aware of oneself, clearing up the old negative patterns and programs that have kept your soul into a repetitious replaying of events that are designed to crack open your heart and to forgive yourself, as well as those whom you feel have acted against you. (review the Lord’s Prayer — it speaks of forgiveness).
In the end, we are all One. As individualized sparks or fractals of Eternal life, we all have experiences. It is only our human beliefs and programming that compel us to assign negativity to an event or happening in our life. We have judged ourselves and others and that judgment will eventually fall upon ourselves until we can see it, feel it, forgive it, and allow it to naturally dissipate to where the belief no longer has a hold upon our consciousness.
In moving beyond judgment and into detachment, we naturally move beyond the negative effects of karma. Whatever happens, is. Without an emotion or thought-form assigned to the happening, it is simply an experience that can, potentially, teach us more about ourselves.
Gaining a sense of detachment does not mean you suppress your emotions. You allow yourself to be in the body so you might feel them and allow them to move through. Emotions are energy. Thoughts are energy. You are energy. Once you can calmly observe and feel you will naturally come into balance and will step into a frequency level where you are not affected by the Law of Cause and Effect to a great degree. You flow with the Law and in full alignment with Source energy.
Through meditation and contemplation, you release what no longer serves, and are able to serve more fully in your chosen Dharma or sacred work, be it doing good works or simply learning how to sweep a floor well so your little house is clean and tidy.
‘The Bible refers to Karma in the book of Galatians when it says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” If you sow evil, you will reap evil in the form of suffering. And if you sow goodness, you will reap goodness in the form of inner joy. Every action, every thought, brings about its own corresponding rewards. Human suffering is not a sign of God’s anger with mankind. It is a sign, rather, of man’s ignorance of the divine law. Karma is the way God teaches us.’ https://www.ananda.org/yogapedia/karma/
Learn about yourself, your inner nature, be humble, accept the gifts you have brought into the world, learn about Cosmic Law and how to live with it and you will discover the inner joy that emerges from a pure heart and open mind. Accept the lessons and opportunities that are presented to you through Life and know that you are here experiencing life by the Grace of your Creator.
If anyone has further questions about karma, I would recommend you do some study on your own. Learn how the Cosmic Laws affect your life, what you can do to align with them, how to release and transmute old stuck energies and return into alignment. This is a task that if you have not started it in other lifetimes (or are currently aware of having started it) can take a while, so be patient with yourself and others.
Remember, I do not claim to be an authority on spiritual teachings. I am not and never have been a priestess. I merely have a natural curiosity about such things and how members of Western society view such teachings.
I hope someday that spirituality becomes a natural part of our lives, interwoven into the fabric of our society. Right now, in Western nations, spirituality has become faddish and shallow, the effect of infiltration of false light teachings deep into the fabric of modern ‘spiritual’ movements.
Real spirituality is simple. It doesn’t do to dwell on these matters in an intellectual manner. Simply breathe, be present and strive to live within the substance and effect of Cosmic Law in your day-to-day life. Through your willingness to be present, you will be naturally guided from within towards that which you need to release, as you gain a sense of appreciation and gratitude for the gift of life and the opportunity to humbly serve through your good works and dharma.
Blessings to all,
Eliza
